In the heart of Maldonado, Uruguay, an architectural marvel has risen that sets new standards in design, technology, and sustainable practices. Bodega Garzón Winery, a sprawling 205,000-square-foot estate, is not just another winery; it's a testament to innovation and environmental responsibility. What makes this winery truly extraordinary is its distinction as the first sustainable, LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) winery outside of North America. This prestigious certification comes after meeting the stringent requirements set by the United States Green Building Council, demonstrating Bodega Garzón's unwavering commitment to eco-conscious practices.
What makes Bodega Garzón even more remarkable is its architectural attention to detail. The exclusive wine club area of the property boasts an intriguing touch with its utilisation of Archant Wovenpanel® in a bronze finish. This contemporary look seamlessly combines high-definition Lock Crimp with a traditional square mesh design, creating a highly scalable pattern that readily interfaces with all types of structures. It's not only economical but also classic, making it the perfect choice to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the winery.
The winery's Linford style was chosen as a cohesive design element, with wire mesh seamlessly integrated into the doors, transoms, partitions, and wine lockers within the wine club area. The wire mesh installations throughout the wine club's interior vary, from some applications keeping the material raw and exposed to others sandwiching the wire mesh between glass partitions for a more polished look.
The architectural masterpiece was brought to life by the renowned Argentina-based architects Bórmida & Yanzón, known for their exceptional work on projects like O. Fournier, Salentein, Bodega Vistalba, and The Vines Resort & Spa. Sustainability is at the core of the winery's design, and every sustainable element was meticulously developed by Samconsult and its team of LEED-accredited professionals. The interiors are equally awe-inspiring and were designed by California-based Backen Gillam & Kroeger Architects, who have a rich portfolio including The Napa Valley Reserve, Harlan Estate, Ovid, Dana Estates, and Bond Estate Winery. Collaborating with them is Aspen, CO-based Eigelberger Architecture + Design, further enhancing the winery's aesthetic appeal.
The property itself is a sprawling wonderland that encompasses 500 acres of vineyards, a state-of-the-art winery, and production facility. The tasting room offers guests breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque countryside. There's also a retail space, a wine club, an open-fire restaurant, and immaculate caves for barrel storage, tours, private dining, and events.
Bodega Garzón Winery is a testament to what can be achieved when design elegance, modern technology, and a dedication to sustainable practices converge. It's an ode to the beauty of South American hospitality, a place where the love for wine and the environment coexist in perfect harmony. A visit to this extraordinary winery is not just about wine; it's an experience that immerses you in a world of exquisite taste and responsible luxury.
