The Archant Wovenpanel® Brixton has left its mark on the recently revamped Proper Hotel in San Francisco, which opened its doors in late 2017. The interior design vision of the renowned Kelly Wearstler Design is on full display, seamlessly integrating maximalist design elements with the restoration of the Beaux Arts interior architecture that characterises the building. Notably listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Proper Hotel introduces a range of fresh features within its lobby, among them an eye-catching stair enclosure crafted from the architectural woven wire mesh of Archant Wovenpanel® Brixton.

Affectionately referred to as "the cage," this two-story steel enclosure in the lobby makes a bold yet intricately refined artistic statement. It visually envelops the central staircase, setting it apart from the front desk reception and the main lounge spaces. The inspiration for this unique design was drawn from iconic San Francisco landmarks like the Golden Gate and Oakland Bay Bridges, as well as the historic "cage" elevators commonly found in the early 20th century.

Kelly Wearstler, Founder of Kelly Wearstler Design, shared insights into the design process, stating, "When envisioning this intricate structure, my goal was to capture the essence of exposed metal structures found in my sources of inspiration." Wovenpanel® Brixton, emerged as the design team's solution due to its diverse array of styles and patterns. This selection provided them the creative latitude to experiment with various configurations and combinations, ultimately achieving the ideal equilibrium between transparency and texture.

The fabrication of "the cage" was entrusted to Oakland-based Five Twenty Two Industries. They expertly utilised three of Archant Wovenpanel® Brixton's popular wire mesh patterns: a twin wire weave that masterfully balances spacing and wire diameter for strength and sturdiness. To introduce an extra layer of visual intrigue to the area, Five Twenty Two Industries employed a hand-applied oil-rubbed bronze finish for the wire mesh. The result is a captivating contrast against the white walls and marble flooring that typify the lobby's turn-of-the-century ambiance.
