How Much Do Quartz Benchtops Cost in NZ? (2023 Pricing Guide)

As we forge further into a new year, we’re hearing from an increased number of homeowners, designers, and joiners who are interested in engineered stone benchtops. Perhaps it was one of our recent kitchen renovation projects that caught your attention, or you’ve heard about the benefits of quartz surfaces. Maybe you’ve been scouring the internet for details regarding the cost of quartz in NZ in 2023. Regardless of how you got here, we have great news for you. Engineered stone is an amazing, and budget-friendly option that’s well worth considering.

So, how much will a quartz benchtop cost in 2023? To ascertain the price, let’s learn a bit more about your project. It’s not just the measurements, but other variables that can drive the cost up or down.

In this article, we’ll take you to step by step through the main items to factor in. By defining the scope of your project, we can give you a fairly accurate idea of what to budget for. And while engineered stone truly makes for a world-class surface, you may be surprised at just how reasonably priced quartz can be when compared to other benchtop materials.

Let’s Talk About Layout

When you’re starting the design process, it’s advantageous to envision and draw out the kitchen’s layout. For new builds or major renovations, this is a great opportunity to refine your workflow. This will be time well spent, as it will streamline your meal prep sessions.

Whether you’re working with quartz or a different engineered stone, the configuration is of critical importance. Perhaps the simplest and most cost-effective option is for the worktop to stretch along one wall. If it’s a wide space, we can even join two slabs together rather seamlessly. Alternatively, you may want to consider an L-Shape layout. This will add a new dimension to the space, but only if there’s enough room to support it.

Another consideration is the U-Shape layout which offers ample counter space. And last but certainly not least, is the “Galley” configuration. This includes two slabs running parallel to each other. Usually, one side will house the hob, while the other has the sink and tap.

As you might expect, a basic layout that only requires one slab of quartz will be far more price effective than a complex design. Once you start to factor in joins, angles, mitering, and multiple cutouts, the labour increases as does the cost. If for example, you installed a quartz bench that measured 3000 x 600mm, it would be more budget-friendly than an L-Shape of 3000 x 2000mm.

No matter what layout you decide on, there is a simple rule of thumb to follow. Make sure you’re leaving at least 1 metre of space on the exposed sides of the bench. This is essential to prevent a cramped area. It’ll also be enough to allow cabinet doors and drawers to open properly.

Do You Have a Style in Mind?

Quartz is a type of engineered stone that allows for a huge variety of colours, patterns, and finishes.  Archant offers three distinctive finishes which include polished, matte, and textured finishes. While these are all gorgeous options, they will be priced differently. Part of the cost equation is also based on the colour, pattern, and of course, thickness.

For example, a worktop that’s 20mm in thickness will be priced lower than a sheet with a 30mm thickness. And while they are all unique counter solutions, you can rest assured each one is of the highest quality. This abundance of options gives you, the consumer, a vast array of choices. Ultimately, this level of availability makes quartz benchtops well within reach for our many of our clients.

Finishing Touches

At this point, you’ve reviewed some of the more critical aspects of the benchtop design. You’re almost done! But first, you have a few additional options to consider.

If this project is about creating your dream kitchen, it’s the little things that sometimes make a big difference. Taking a moment now to consider the details such as edge profiles can help make the space feel more like home. There are many stylish ways to customise a quartz benchtop. One of the more popular options we’re seeing is the inclusion of “waterfall edges”. These span from the top edge of the counter down to the floor. It has a more refined look and gives the bench a luxurious appeal that’s on-trend in 2023. This is also an ideal time to identify any necessary cut-outs for a hob, sink, tap, or power point.

To help keep your quartz benchtop looking new, we also offer an engineered stone cleaning kit.
